 Let the Games Begin!
I am starting this thread so we can update everyone with our trip to Watkins Glen. Of course I'll be there rock'n my POS. Sean is bringing his new Magnus manifold EVO9 down...and Chris has his "dime store tuned" EVO10. I am guessing but we may see some EVO to EVO action out there. Rounding out the group is John "nobody knows me unless you went to Shannonsville 10 years ago" in his WRX and one special "don't call it a comeback" guest who's making his long awaited return. This time in something a little different...
to be continued....

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
I've got my brakes sorted out, my 2 gallon water injection tank in place, and my fuel pump re-wired. The boost controller is set and its hold 24psi knock free to the redline. I stopped out at STM and picked up 5 gallons of methanol and Emery gave me a new set of plugs to try out. They are a retracted tip BR8ES plug which I am hoping will help me run the higher boost for the entire 20 minutes session. I have to change the oil and clean the car up but those things can wait until Sunday. Brake cooling ducts I'll do when I get there.
This is going to be good!

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
Brake work starts tonight. ATE Super Blue from Emery, Hawk Blues, and ducting setup. Yay. Have one annoying leak I need to try to track down before driving down. Oil change happens tonight and fluids all get topped off.

It helps us all live vicariously through your trip. I wish I was a government worker, so I could justify the free day off of work to check it out. Damn Columbus Day doesn't mean shit to a UK based company. Stephen

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
Coulda, shoulda, woulda done an 11! Nice one Sean... Indeed it will be a great time down there and I'm doing a few finishing touches on the car as we speak. I'm bedding the race pads in and will let them sit over night. I'm concentrating on learning the car properly at higher speeds at first then worrying about going faster. These pads should be pure evil on the track being able to touch the limits of the street tires traction at 80 mph, as in catch up 5 car lengths in the braking zone kind. The anticipation is killing me!

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
LOL. Just bustin your balls Mr. Wirth. Update: Race pads are in but need to be bedded. Stock fluid is out, ATE Super Blue is in and calipers are bled. Ducting is in and mounted. Found 2 leaks ( one vac line and one injector seal ) and have fixed both ( I think ). Just need to do some last minute things like give it a good once over, top off any fluids, grease up a few things, and give it a good cleaning.

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
Just a quick apology to anyone living near route 65... LOL! I got on the expressway at first but realized speeding up to 80 and slowing down to 20 would likely attract too much attention so I headed down route 65 to bed my pads in properly. HOLY CRAP, when I first got on the brakes they were squealing like a banshee and I can see sparks showering out of my wheel wells, good stuff! I had some suv driver a 1/4 mile back flashing their lights at me, spose they were trying to warn me my brakes were seemingly on fire and down to the squeal indicators. So I did what any responsible citizen would do, I floored it to 80 and did some threshold braking to quiet these suckers down! I guess I also have flames shooting out of my exhausts after letting off the throttle at high RPM's, must look really cool at night too! haha... It took about 6-7 trips to 80 and ABS tickling stops down to 20 before the brakes finally quieted down and I could start to smell them. Apparently the deer don't take too kindly to all that noise either, kinda nice that they scatter way before you reach them. Wow is all I can say, I coasted home to let them cool and parked it without the ebrake of course. No more squealing or sparks for that matter, these suckers will be good to go for the track now!

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
LOL @ Chris. I was doing the same thing last night. Only it was up and down 590 north of 490. A few mild 70 to 30 slow downs with no one coming then a couple of 90ish to 20 to finish off the job. Definitely smell the pads coming up to speed. One thing that was a bit of a concern is that the pad contact patch size on the stock pads is smaller and not as wide as the aftermarket pads which caused a few spark/rub issues at first. After a bit of braking, it's no longer much of an issue and I am sure the rest will take care of itself with a the first few hard braking zones. obz wrote: curiosity: what pads do you guys run? I am running Hawk Blues up front with Hawk HP+ in the rear. I think Chris is using some other pad.

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
You guys know you really only have to slow from 45-20mph to bed your brakes in? I know its more fun to do it from 80 but its had to talk your way out of a ticket when your're 15 over the speed limit.
I run Hawk HT-10's in the front and stock pads in the rear.

I run Hawk HT-10's in the front and stock pads in the rear. Yeah but at the same time I was checking for leaks and boost hold to verify the leaks I fixed earlier. So I figured if I was making a full 3rd gear run, might as well use it to brake.

 Re: Let the Games Begin!
The trip down was uneventful...well after the suprised look wore off of Chris's face. We met up at the thruway entrance at 3pm and made it down by 4:10pm. Traffic was OK but there was line of Corvette's which were going 53mph which needed a blast of the dump tube. We got checked in and went back to the cabin for some beer on the porch followed by diner at the lodge and some more beer before bed.
Tomorrow is going to be an early start for me. I have to install my brake cooling ducts and get ready for my first session at 8:30am.
